Frequently Asked Questions

What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a military self-defence and combative fighting system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces. For over 70 years it’s been taught to thousands of frontline personnel all around the world making it the longest standing military CQB (Close Quarters Battle) system in modern history.

Why should I start Krav Maga?

Learning Krav Maga will not only help you to build confidence and boost your fitness, but it will also provide you with the skills necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones from potentially dangerous situations and violent confrontations.

Where do you train?

We train on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at The Lower Gym, St.Augustine's sport centre on the Oakwood Park campus in Maidstone. Monday and Wednesday are from 19:30- 21:30, Saturday's session is from 10:30-11:30.

Am I too old or unfit?

Age or fitness aren't an issue as long as you are capable of participating in the class. We have had students in their fifties and sixties who have trained regularly. You'll be given a health assessment before your first class so that we can tailor the training to your level of exertion.

Will I get hurt?

Possibly. We try to keep our training as close to real violence as we safely can and there is an element of risk in all physical training. Bruises are not uncommon but serious injuries are rare.

Will it be an intimidating environment?

Maybe at first, but you will very quickly be made to feel part of the family. Our members are the heart and soul of the club and we would absolutely not allow anybody with the wrong attitude to continue training.

Will I get in trouble with the police if I use Krav Maga?

If you use it the wrong way - yes. However, we wouldn't accept any students whose intentions were not strictly to defend themselves. As we cover each facet of real-world violence, we will always talk about the legal ramifications of acting in self-defence and teach you how to ensure your actions are within the law.

Is there a long-term commitment?

There's no commitment for a free-trial session. After that, if you do decide to train with us, we only ask that you commit for a minimum of three months training before deciding whether Krav Maga is for you.

Will I get a belt?

No. We don't use a belt system but we do operate voluntary gradings where you can obtain practitioner level certificates relevant to your level. Obtaining your P Levels is a great way to demonstrate your proficiency and achieve recognition for your hard work in training. It also tracks your progression and helps you set personal targets to aim for.

What do I need to wear?

Comfortable exercise clothing suitable for training close combat techniques. Most of our members wear branded t-shirts which can be purchased through the club.

Are there competitions?

No. Krav Maga is neither a sport nor a martial art. It is strictly intended for self-defence and many of the techniques are designed to cause injury. This makes it unsuitable for competition.

Is it suitable for women?

Very much so. Krav Maga is ideal for women looking to learn a self-defence system that isn’t based on brute strength, size or physicality. This makes it an ideal system for women.

Do I need any equipment?

No, just a bottle of water for your trial session. As you progress, we’ll advise you on what kit you’ll need and there are starter pack options available from the KMG online store.

Can children learn Krav Maga?

Yes. But this isn't something we are able to offer at this point. Due to the reality-based element of our training and the adult themed nature of the things we discuss, we require our members to be 18 years of age or older to attend our regular class.

Are there social events?

Absolutely! We are a very inclusive club with a friendly social element that likes to get together every so often for meals out and other events. There’s also the opportunity to attend seminars to improve your knowledge and skills surrounding the subject matter.
